Spanning over 200 miles, the system weaves through neighborhoods, parks, schools, and shopping hubs, offering uninterrupted scenic routes for walkers, runners, families, and casual strollers  . According to Julie Cleaver, Senior VP of Commercial and Residential Planning for Summerlin, walkability and connectivity were foundational from the outset. That commitment shows: in resident surveys, trails consistently top the list of favorite amenities  . Whether it’s a morning jog along landscaped, lighted sidewalks or an evening walk through serene arroyos, the trails integrate Outdoor life into daily living.

But Summerlin isn’t resting on its laurels. In Summerlin West—just past the 215 Beltway—a new wave of multi-modal trails is taking shape. These “complete streets” are being designed not only for pedestrians and leisure walkers but also for serious cyclists and urban commuters  . Focus groups of mountain bikers, casual riders, and pedestrians helped shape the design, resulting in separated bike lanes, wider sidewalks, and safer, shared-use paths  .

The trail network itself is diverse—maintaining proportional, context-driven design. There are four core trail types:

1. Landscaped street-side trails – Tree-lined and illuminated, ideal for daily walking and casual jogging.
2. Village trails – Located in arroyos and open spaces, offering a quiet escape for long-distance walkers  .
3. Regional/multi-use trails – Designed to connect outlying Summerlin to a broader Las Vegas Valley system.
4. Natural earth‑tread trails – Rustic routes that eventually link to vast undeveloped stretches or public lands  .

The next frontier? A direct connection to Red Rock Canyon via the Clark County Red Rock Canyon Legacy Trails project. A new 5.5‑mile trail segment is set to stretch from Stonebridge along SR‑159 to the Red Rock Visitors Center. It’s being funded by federal wildfire land grants and local partnerships, with construction slated to begin soon  . This link isn’t just about access—it’s about preserving safety, as cyclists currently share narrow roads with fast-moving traffic on SR‑159 .

Summerlin’s intentional plan shines through: nearly all houses and facilities are within a trail’s reach. Beyond adventure, these pathways foster health, relaxation, community events, and—importantly—a cohesive sense of belonging. They physically connect homes to schools, parks, hospitals, libraries, retail centers, and even venues like City National Arena and Las Vegas Ballpark  .

Award-winning design further underscores Summerlin’s success. Summerlin’s developer, The Howard Hughes Corporation, earned the American Trails Developer Award in 2008, which honors quality multi-use trail systems. In 2015, they also won gold for Best Landscape Design from the National Association of Homebuilders  .

Thirty‑plus years into its creation, Summerlin now features over 200 miles of trails, 300 parks, ten golf courses, 26 schools, and vibrant urban centers—including Downtown Summerlin  . But it’s the trail miles—threading every aspect of life—that truly tie it all together.
